The Process: Creating something beautiful!
Really delving into the process - the research, designing costumes, creating the story... I love it all! I especially enjoy the challenge of creating movement that illustrates the specific idea I'm trying to convey.
I often work in what I like to call "abstract narrative." That means I like to tell stories, but not necessarily in a linear way. In case you missed my previous posts on this process, The Bloom & The Blackness is essentially about the disenfranchisement and marginalization of Black people in America. The actions of one are seen as the actions of all. We are, for better or worse, chained together by our identity.
I wanted to illustrate those chains - the breaking of them as well as using them to our benefit; through dance. Talk about a challenge! So far, I think it's mostly been successful, but I'm trying to straddle the line between creating something that's so heady that no one understands what I'm trying to say (or cares) and going with my gut to play with movement that feels and looks good. I think I've landed in the middle... I think.
Anyway, I thought you might enjoy some rehearsal photos...
